The One Where I Talk To Myself

12/14/2015

I was reading a blog by artist Mark Brockman in which he questions why he is writing a blog, since he doesn't know if anyone beside he, his wife and a few loyals are reading it.  Before he started blogging, he would have conversations with himself about his art.  During these conversations, he would have good ideas, but would not always remember them afterwards - that's how his blog was born.

I thought, "This is great idea for a blog!"

Me: Hey, good morning Sam!  How are you?
Sam: I'm great - just got this good idea for a blog!

Me:  So, you're writing a blog today and do you have other art plans for the day?
Sam:  Well, I'm starting a new piece - big, 30 x30, on canvas, which is different for me, since I usually paint on wood panels.

Me:  Why canvas then?
Sam:  Because I'm scared of canvas - it talks back when I paint on it, you know. It's got some give to it. You have to treat it differently, and I want to conquer my fear of it.

Me:  What are you going to paint?
Sam:  I don't know exactly what it will be, but I know it will have to do with "coincidentia oppositorum" - which means, a conjunction of opposites, in this case something containing both light and dark.

Me:  Sounds appropriate for the approaching solstice.
Sam:  It is isn't it?  It's timely for a lot of reasons. I'm reading a book called "Dispelling Wetiko, Breaking The Curse of Evil", by Paul Levy.  It's a book that explains the evil in the world in terms of the archetypal collective consciousness, and what we can do about it.  I highly recommend it. I really makes you think about the role that each of us plays in creating the world we are living in.

Me:  You're big on that idea aren't you?  The idea that everyone is creating the reality we are living in.
Sam:   I am.  Haha, see that right there?  I AM - We are that which we experience.

Me:  Ok, you're getting away from me here...
Sam:  You can't really get away from me, because we're connected on so many levels - quantum-ly, spiritually, etc.... but I know what you mean.  My point is the we are creators. We are the spark of creativity and minute by minute we're creating what our lives will be and in turn, what the world will be. We can do it unconsciously or consciously.  Even if we're trying to do it consciously, there's a lot of unconscious stuff going on.  That's the "dark" that the book talks about - bringing the dark into the light to dispell it.  You should read the book...

Me:  Interesting, I'll check it out.... and I'll look forward to seeing your painting when it's finished.
Sam:  Yeah, I hope it turns out.  We'll see what happens with it... It might just turn out to be a dog with a birthday cake.... but I trust it will be more than that.  Thanks!
